Today, the widow of the carpenter who tragically lost his life in the Narammala police shooting incident lodged a Fundamental Rights petition with the Supreme Court, demanding Rs. 200 million in compensation from the police officers involved, including Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Today, the widow of the carpenter who tragically lost his life in the Narammala police shooting incident lodged a Fundamental Rights petition with the Supreme Court, demanding Rs. 200 million in compensation from the police officers involved, including Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The widow of Roshan Kumarasiri, the carpenter fatally shot in the Narammala police shooting, has taken legal action by filing a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court. In her petition, she seeks compensation totaling Rs. 200 million from the implicated police officers, with Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon named among them.

The petitioner, Kamani Rupika Priyangani, recounts her marriage to the deceased in 2007 and highlights their three children, including twin daughters, presently aged 16, preparing for their G.C.E. (O/L) Examinations, and a son, eight years old, studying in Grade three.

Alleging arbitrary and abusive use of power by Sub Inspector Gunawardena and Police Constable Chamuditha Bandara Kulasekara, the first and second respondents respectively, the petitioner contends that they acted unlawfully during the ‘Yukthiya Operation’. She further accuses the OIC of the Narammala Police Station, Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, and the State of enabling these actions in violation of applicable laws and procedural guidelines.

Moreover, the petitioner reveals that Acting IGP Tennakoon visited her residence post-incident and provided a one-million-rupee compensation check.

In addition to seeking financial compensation, the petitioner aims to secure a declaration affirming the violation of her husband’s fundamental rights under the Constitution by the respondents and the State.

The petition, represented by Attorney-at-law Sunil Watagala, underscores the widow’s pursuit of justice and accountability for the tragic loss of her husband.
