23 January 2024: The 2024 GWM Tank 500 – the Chinese car giant’s rival for the Toyota Prado – is due in showrooms in April or May this year priced from $66,490 drive-away.
Two models are available at launch, both fitted with petrol-electric hybrid power good for claimed fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres, according to GWM – on par with a diesel-powered Toyota Prado.
The entry-level Lux model is priced from $66,490 drive-away, equivalent to – or slightly cheaper than – a base-model Toyota Prado GX, which is priced from $62,830 plus on-road costs, or an estimated $67,000 to $68,000 drive-away depending on where it is registered.
The Ultra – which adds nappa leather trim (replacing leather-look), ventilated and massaging front seats, premium audio, and other features – is priced from $73,990 drive-away.
Powering all GWM Tank 500 SUVs in Australia for now is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine matched with an electric motor, nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
System outputs are rated at 255kW and 648Nm, while towing capacity is up to 3000kg braked (or 750kg unbraked), and the fuel tank can hold 80 litres.
A 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 is available overseas – with 260kW and 500Nm outputs – but it will not be offered in Australia for the time being.
The four-wheel-drive system has 2H, AWD, 4H and 4L modes – so it can be run in 4WD mode on sealed surfaces – assisted by a rear differential lock, low-range transfer case, turn assist function, and 11 drive modes.
GWM quotes 224mm of ground clearance (when unloaded), 800mm wading depth, 30-degree approach angle, 22.5-degree breakover angle, and a 24-degree departure angle.
Standard features in the Tank 500 Lux include a 14.6-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch instrument display, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-look upholstery, 360-degree camera, and a suite of advanced safety features.
There are four exterior colours – Onyx Silver, Crystal Black, Marble White and Dune Gold – with black faux leather seats in the Lux, and black or blue/cream two-tone nappa leather in the flagship Ultra.
The 2024 GWM Tank 500 is due to commence customer deliveries in Australia “early” in the second quarter of this year, pointing to April or May.
