Rise in Childhood Asthma Cases Prompts Parental Caution, Health Experts Warn

Health experts in Sri Lanka have raised concerns over a noticeable increase in asthma cases among children, urging parents to take precautions.

Dr. Deepal Perera, a Paediatrician at Colombo’s Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, attributed the rise in asthma cases to the extreme heat prevalent in the region.

As schools prepare for sports events and outdoor activities amidst the scorching weather, children are at higher risk of asthma triggers, Dr. Perera cautioned. He emphasized the importance of parents remaining vigilant about their children’s health during this time.

Dr. Perera also highlighted the detrimental effects of exposure to smoke on respiratory health, particularly for children with asthma. He advised keeping children away from smoking areas to prevent exacerbation of respiratory complications.

Parents were urged to be vigilant for common symptoms of childhood asthma, including shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and persistent coughing. Taking proactive measures and seeking medical attention promptly can help manage asthma effectively in children.
