A man has been charged after he was arrested by tradies for allegedly stabbing a woman in her head and upper body.

Witnesses have told police the 47-year-old woman and the 21-year-old man were having an argument on the street at Roberts Ave in Randwick before he allegedly stabbed her multiple times with a paint scrapper.

The man was then chased down by a group of locals who “rugby tackled” the man, and made a citizens arrest before police arrived and placed him on police guard at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Overnight on Thursday, the man was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm DV. He was refused bail and will appear before Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

After the alleged stabbing, the woman was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Speaking to the ABC, one witness described how three locals intervened to stop the man from running away.

“I was just walking down here when I saw three lads running down here and tackle a man … next to the bottle shop, and just took him down,” she said.

One of the tradies who went after the man said he was in shock.

“A lady got stabbed, it was just a mad scene. I’m just in shock,” the Randwick local said.
