  • Leather seats, matrix headlights, 20-inch wheels standard
  • Priced from $67,990 plus on-road costs

The 2024 Peugeot 408 is due in Australian showrooms between July and September this year priced from $67,990 plus on-road costs.

The 408 has the approximate footprint of a Toyota RAV4 family SUV, and has tall suspension for an SUV-like look, but has a streamlined, sedan-like body with a hatchback tailgate.

It will launch in Australia in a single, top-of-the-range plug-in hybrid model – the GT – priced from $67,990 before on-road costs, or more than $70,000 drive-away.

It is $3000 dearer than the equivalent plug-in hybrid version of the 308 hatch – with which the 408 shares its DNA – but cheaper than larger 3008 SUV and 508 sedan plug-in hybrids, which are priced in excess of $80,000.

Cheaper 408s with petrol power have been approved for sale in Australia, government documents show – but they are yet to be confirmed for showrooms.

The 408 was initially due in showrooms in late 2023, however it has been pushed to the third quarter of 2024 (July to September) – a delay of about nine months. Pre-orders are open now.

Powering the 408 plug-in hybrid is a 132kW 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and an 81kW electric motor, 12.4kWh battery pack and eight-speed automatic transmission for 165kW and 360Nm combined.

Peugeot claims 60km of electric-only driving range in European WLTP testing, and fuel consumption in lenient lab testing of 1.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

Charging is limited to 3.7kW on an AC socket, with an empty to full charge claimed to take six hours on a home powerpoint, or 3.5 hours on a 7.4kW or 11kW plug (given the car can only accept 3.7kW).

Standard features include a 10-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10-inch instrument display, matrix LED headlights, heated and massaging power-adjustable front seats, nappa leather upholstery and a suite of safety technology.

A full list of standard equipment is included at the bottom of this story.

The 2024 Peugeot 408 is now available to pre-order ahead of first showroom arrivals after July 2024.
