The VinFast Wild could be Vietnam’s electric answer to the booming US pick-up market, though detailed information about the concept vehicle is so far non-existent.
Vietnamese automotive start-up VinFast has shown off an electric ute concept at one of the largest technology shows in the US – but details about the battery-powered dual-cab are limited.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, VinFast unveiled the ‘Wild’ – a concept of what could eventually become the Vietnam-based brand’s first pick-up.
The VinFast Wild is a mid-size ute and measures up closely to the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux – rather than best-selling, full-size pick-ups such the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.
While VinFast has not detailed power outputs or battery size for the Wild, it claims the pick-up features a ‘midgate’, allowing the 1.5-metre cargo bed to be opened into the cabin, providing extra space for long items.
Designed in part by Australian firm Gomotiv, the VinFast Wild concept also incorporates reverse-hinged rear doors, flat-folding second row seats and a rectangular steering wheel – though it’s not yet known if these features will carry across to a production version of the pick-up.
VinFast is yet to announce production plans for the Wild, however the Vietnamese brand has been expanding its model line-up in the US – despite negative reviews from the motoring press for poor build quality, refinement, and driving dynamics.
In October 2023, VinFast announced it would spend $US400 million on electric-vehicle factories in India and Indonesia – both right-hand-drive markets – potentially opening the door to an Australian launch.
The company purchased Holden’s former Proving Ground site at Lang Lang, Victoria and hired dozens of the Australian brand’s former engineers following the iconic marque’s demise in 2020 – but shuttered its Port Melbourne office in May 2021 and put the test site up for sale in September 2021.
