Shark sighted at Coogee beach

[ad_1]

Swimmers at Coogee beach were ordered out of the water on Sunday after a shark was spotted close to the shore.

The shark alarm sounded at about 8.30am on Sunday at the popular Sydney beach.

The beach reopened after 9am after lifeguards carried out all checks and clearances.

One local told NCA NewsWire: “We were told to get out of the water. It was pretty frightening.

“The beach was pretty busy, as the weather is good.”

Locals took to social media to discuss the sighting, describing the animal as being “quite big”.

According to the NSW government’s shark smart map, there is a shark net at Coogee beach, and a SMART drumline off the coast at Clovelly.

The sighting comes weeks after a teenage boy was mauled to death in a suspected great white shark attack off South Australia’s Yorke Peninsular.

Khai Cowley, 15, died in late December after the incident off Ethel Beach.

Two other men died in South Australia last year in shark attacks.

The last known shark attack in NSW was last August, when a surfer was left fighting for his life after being bitten by a great white shark at Port Macquarie.

This summer has marked the second time SMART drumlines, drones and tagged shark listening stations were deployed at NSW beaches which also have shark nets.
