A Queensland pilot and passenger involved in a dramatic light plane crash landing have miraculously walked away from the wreckage, after the plane cartwheeled across a property and collided with a tree.
Just after 9am on Sunday, emergency services including a RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter, were called to a private property at Cootharaba, in Queensland’s Noosa Shire.
It’s believed the pilot, a man in his 40s, lost control of the plane as he was landing on a grass airstrip due to an unexpected gust of wind.
RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Aircrew Officer Scott said the plane was “coming into land” before it “ended up somersaulting and crashing into a tree”.
“It clipped a palm tree in a house yard while it was airborne and then cartwheeled end-to-end across the yard and clipped another tree,” he said.
Miraculously, the pilot only suffered minor cuts and declined to go to hospital.
His passenger, and wife, who was also in her 50s, was treated for suspected neck, chest and abdominal injuries. She was then flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman described the crash as a “low-impact emergency landing” and confirmed both occupants were able to “walk off the aircraft”.
This is the third incident the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight crew has responded to this weekend.
On Friday, two men were winched from a sinking life raft after their light plane crashed into the ocean off the Mooloolaba coast. The men were travelling to Pago Pago in American Samoa when the plane lost an engine.
Later that evening, another crew flown a man to hospital after he crashed a paraglider into a beach in the Gympie area.
