The Lanka Premier League has unveiled a revamped player qualification framework for its sixth season, placing equal importance on on-field performance and off-field influence.
Under the updated system, player categories will not only be determined by cricketing achievements but also by commercial value and digital presence, reflecting the league’s growing focus on global visibility and fan engagement.
Stricter Requirements for Top-Tier Players
Players aiming for the elite Icon category must meet demanding benchmarks. These include participating in at least 75 T20 internationals, featuring in more than 100 franchise T20 matches, and maintaining consistent activity with a minimum of 30 matches played over the past 18 months. In addition, candidates must demonstrate strong marketability, including a social media following exceeding 250,000.
Similar thresholds apply to those in the Star category, who are also required to have significant international and franchise experience alongside the same minimum follower base.
Defined Standards Across All Categories
Mid-tier Gold category players must have played at least 30 T20 internationals and over 75 franchise matches, along with 20 appearances in the last 18 months. A digital following of more than 150,000 is also required.
For the Classic category, eligibility includes a minimum of 20 T20 internationals and more than 50 franchise games, with recent match participation also taken into account. While specific follower numbers are not mandated, players must demonstrate a solid fan base and commercial appeal.
Eligibility Rules for Overseas and Local Players
The league has also outlined clear eligibility guidelines for overseas participants. Foreign players must have either represented their national teams or competed in top-tier T20 competitions — such as those organised by Full Member cricket boards, the International League T20, or Major League Cricket — within the past year.
Meanwhile, retired Sri Lankan players will not be eligible to take part in the upcoming season, reinforcing the league’s emphasis on active professionals.
Revised Salary Structure
The LPL has also confirmed its salary bands for Season 6. Icon and Star category players will earn between USD 60,000 and USD 80,000, while Platinum players are set to receive USD 50,000. Gold category players will be paid USD 30,000, and Classic players USD 20,000.
A Shift Toward Modern Cricket Dynamics
The updated regulations highlight a broader shift in franchise cricket, where performance metrics are increasingly combined with brand value and audience reach. By incorporating social media influence into player selection, the LPL aims to boost its global profile and attract wider fan engagement ahead of its sixth season.
