Grade 1 education reforms set to roll out in 2026

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has confirmed that preparations for the 2026 Grade 1 education reforms are moving forward steadily.

As part of the rollout, activity books for the second and third school terms are already being distributed. Officials expect this process to be completed across all schools by April 30, 2026, ensuring students have timely access to the updated learning materials.

Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa stated that extensive awareness programmes on the revised Grade 1 curriculum have been conducted. These sessions targeted key education stakeholders, including Provincial Primary Subject Directors, Teacher Advisors, trainers, and school teachers.

In addition, Provincial Directors have been instructed to wrap up any remaining training sessions by May 16, 2026, to ensure all educators are fully prepared to implement the new curriculum effectively.

Addressing potential gaps, the Ministry has also advised school principals to cover any portions of the first-term syllabus that may have been missed. Schools are encouraged to complete these sections during the second term to maintain continuity in student learning.

The initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary education and ensure a smooth transition to the updated curriculum for young learners.
