Rohit Sharma Surpasses Virat Kohli’s Long-Standing IPL Milestone

Making his return to T20 cricket after nearly a year, Rohit Sharma delivered a commanding performance, scoring a brilliant 78 off just 38 balls to guide the Mumbai Indians to a memorable victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Chasing a daunting total of 221 after KKR posted 220/4, Mumbai Indians completed the task with five balls to spare. Rohit set the tone early, smashing six sixes and six fours in an aggressive innings that laid the foundation for the run chase.

He was well supported by Ryan Rickelton, who top-scored with a rapid 81 from 43 deliveries. The pair combined for a crucial 148-run opening partnership, putting Mumbai firmly in control of the chase from the outset.

During his knock, Rohit also etched his name into the record books by surpassing Virat Kohli’s long-standing IPL milestone. He now holds the record for the most runs scored against a single team in IPL history, accumulating 1,161 runs against KKR in 36 matches, overtaking Kohli’s previous tally of 1,159 runs against Punjab Kings.

The updated list of players with the most runs against a single IPL team now sees Rohit at the top, followed by Kohli’s records against Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals, along with David Warner’s contributions against Punjab Kings and KKR.

In addition to this milestone, Rohit achieved another significant feat by becoming only the fourth player in IPL history to register 50 or more scores of fifty-plus. He joins an elite group featuring Kohli, Warner, and Shikhar Dhawan.

Rohit remains one of the most successful figures in IPL history, boasting six titles—one with the Deccan Chargers and five as captain of Mumbai Indians. After joining the franchise in 2011, he took over the leadership role in 2013 and immediately led the team to its first championship, going on to captain them for over a decade before handing over to Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2024 season.

He continues to be Mumbai Indians’ leading run-scorer of all time and is among the few players to have crossed the 6,000-run mark in the IPL. One of his standout seasons came in 2013, when he scored 538 runs and guided the team to a title-winning campaign.

Rohit’s latest performance not only powered Mumbai Indians to a thrilling win but also reinforced his legacy as one of the IPL’s most consistent and influential players.
