The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI 2025) officially begins today in Goa, marking the start of one of Asia’s most prestigious cinematic events. This year’s edition is set to showcase an extraordinary lineup of over 240 films from 81 countries, making it a vibrant celebration of creativity, storytelling, and cultural exchange.
Japan has been selected as the Country of Focus, with six contemporary Japanese films taking centre stage. Ahead of today’s opening, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant inspected the festival venues to ensure smooth proceedings. He will inaugurate The WAVES Film Bazaar at 11 am, a key event that attracts producers, filmmakers, and global collaborators seeking co-production and networking opportunities.
The Chief Minister will be joined by Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of Information and Broadcasting. Continuing a meaningful partnership, IFFI has once again collaborated with UNICEF to highlight stories of childhood—the joys, struggles, and inspirations reflected through cinema.
As IFFI 2025 unfolds, Goa has transformed into a vibrant cultural canvas. The curtain-raiser parade will set the tone for the festival with a spectacular display of colours, music, dance, and artistic performances. It will celebrate India’s cinematic legacy and the endless possibilities of visual storytelling.
The festival promises 13 world premieres, 5 international premieres, and 46 Asian premieres, making it a significant platform for filmmakers across the globe. Iconic figures such as Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, Ritwik Ghatak, P. Bhanumathi, Bhupen Hazarika, and Salil Chowdhury will be honoured for their contribution to Indian cinema. A special tribute will also mark 50 years of Rajinikanth—a milestone celebrating his unmatched influence in the industry.
For the first time, IFFI is hosting an AI Film Hackathon—a 48-hour innovation sprint aimed at exploring artificial intelligence in filmmaking and enhancing cinematic storytelling through cutting-edge technology.
Adding to the excitement is IFFIESTA, a four-day cultural extravaganza featuring live music, theatrical storytelling, and performances that highlight India’s cultural richness. With its scenic beaches and vibrant atmosphere, Goa serves as the perfect backdrop for this grand cinematic celebration.
IFFI 2025 is poised to deliver an unforgettable experience, uniting global audiences and reaffirming cinema’s power to transform, inspire, and connect.
