In a significant diplomatic success, 56 Pakistani nationals, who had been detained in Sri Lanka for several years, are finally returning home today.
This development follows months of intense negotiations led by Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Interior, Mohsin Naqvi, and cooperation with Sri Lankan authorities. A specially chartered flight has been arranged to bring back the detainees, with financial backing provided by Federal Minister for Privatization, Abdul Aleem Khan, who covered all the repatriation expenses.
Key Developments:
- Diplomatic Efforts: Minister Naqvi worked closely with the Sri Lankan government over the past three months to secure the release of these prisoners. His engagement culminated in a successful agreement, allowing the detainees’ return.
- Financial Support: Abdul Aleem Khan played a crucial role by providing the necessary funds for the repatriation process, ensuring the safe and smooth return of these individuals.
- Sri Lankan Cooperation: Minister Naqvi thanked the Sri Lankan government and its High Commissioner for their continued cooperation and assistance in resolving this issue.
While this is a significant milestone, it’s important to note that more than 23,000 Pakistanis remain detained in various foreign countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with ongoing efforts to secure their release as well.
Stay tuned for updates on further diplomatic developments as Pakistan continues to repatriate its citizens from abroad.
