Ramadan: Fasting month for Muslims begins after crescent moon spotted

Approximately 2 billion Muslims worldwide are started to observe Ramadan, contingent upon the crescent moon’s sighting. This period is dedicated to fasting, prayer, introspection, and community engagement, marking the month when Muslims believe the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. A fundamental tenet of Islam, Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars, encompassing core beliefs and practices such as the declaration of faith, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage.

The commencement of Ramadan is determined by the lunar-based Islamic calendar, aligning with the sighting of the crescent moon. This results in Ramadan starting approximately 10 to 12 days earlier each year compared to the Gregorian calendar. For the year 2024, the anticipated conclusion of Ramadan falls on either April 9 or April 10. The confirmation of the moon sighting varies by region, with countries like Saudi Arabia relying on testimonies to the Supreme Court for the official declaration. However, advancements in technology and international collaboration contribute valuable insights into the expected visibility of the moon. Data indicates that the new moon of Ramadan in 2024 is technically set to begin on March 10 at 5:23 p.m. UTC, but its visibility to the naked eye may not occur until the following night, influencing the commencement date of Ramadan across different countries.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims refrain from consuming food, beverages, smoking, and other physical necessities from dawn until sunset. The pre-dawn meal is known as suhoor, while the evening meal that breaks the fast is termed iftar. The conclusion of Ramadan is celebrated with Eid al-Fitr, a joyous occasion characterized by familial bonds, friendships, gift-giving, and charitable endeavors. Certain individuals, including the elderly, young, sick, pregnant or breastfeeding women, menstruating women, and travelers, are exempt from fasting, with the expectation to observe it at a later time.

May this Ramadan bring abundant blessings, peace, and joy to your life and the lives of your loved ones.
