4.9-Magnitude Quake Rattles Coachella Valley, California

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled Southern California’s Coachella Valley on January 19, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake struck approximately 12 miles northeast of Indio at around 5:56 p.m. PT, sending strong tremors across the valley, located about 130 miles east of Los Angeles.

Following the main shock, at least 17 aftershocks were recorded, including two significant ones measuring 3.4 and 3.3, originating at a shallow depth of 1.8 miles beneath the surface. Residents described the shaking as noticeable but brief.

Local authorities in Palm Springs and Indio confirmed that there were no injuries and no immediate signs of damage. Officials also reported that roads and infrastructure appeared largely unaffected, and early assessments from other cities in the Coachella Valley did not indicate any major impact. The region continues to monitor for potential aftershocks.
