Mathura, India: At least 13 people were burnt to death in a devastating multi-vehicle pile-up on the Delhi–Agra (Yamuna) Expressway in Mathura on Tuesday morning, after dense fog severely reduced visibility.
The accident involved seven buses, a tempo traveller, and three cars, which collided in the early hours, causing some vehicles to catch fire. The death toll later rose to 13 from an earlier figure of four, officials confirmed.
Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and said the injured were out of danger and receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Over 12 fire tenders and 14 ambulances were deployed immediately for rescue and relief operations.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured. He also directed authorities to ensure proper medical care.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed condolences and announced similar ex-gratia payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Police officials said rescue operations were nearly complete and efforts were underway to clear the expressway. Authorities confirmed that the thick fog and poor visibility were the primary causes, though a detailed investigation will follow.
The incident comes just a day after another deadly fog-related pile-up on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, highlighting growing concerns over road safety during winter conditions.
